In an interview with Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (as captured by Sport Bild), Union Berlin star Max Kruse indicated he would like to receive a call-up to Germany from former Bayern Munich coach Hansi Flick, but does not think it will happen.
“I am 99 percent sure that I will no longer receive an invitation. Hansi Flick was already part of the coaching staff under Jogi Löw, so his opinion is probably just as stuck as it was with Löw. I’ve come to terms with that,” Kruse said. “If my qualities were still in demand, I would like to be there, but I’m not counting on them now.”
Kruse, who has been excellent for Union Berlin, possesses many qualities that would be attractive to Flick, but adding Kruse would likely come at the expense of a younger player. With numerous veterans already in tow, Flick seems to want to achieve a balance on the squad and not the rampant either “old” or “new” set-up that Löw featured in the last years of his tenure.
