Bayern Munich contract round-up: Who’s in, who’s probably out

There could be a lot of movement on the Bayern Munich roster in the coming months.

Bayern Munich’s front office has gotten a lot of work done so far this season in reaching deals for contract extensions with both Joshua Kimmich and Leon Goretzka. Still, there is much more to be done as the club starts to determine what the squad will look like in the coming years.

The most noise has been surrounding Niklas Süle. While Süle seems to be trending toward a move to the Premier League, Bild says that talk could be premature. Süle might be changing his mind due to Julian Nagelsmann — and the support of the fans.

The big defender is just one of many players whose status is in limbo. Let’s take a look at where some other players are at in the negotiating process:

Corentin Tolisso

  • Contract ends: 2022
  • Status: The word is that Tolisso is definitely leaving Bayern Munich and the only question is when? The club seems to be plotting a winter sale to try and generate some revenue before losing him for free next summer.
  • BFW prediction: Winter sale.

Sven Ulreich

Contract ends: 2022

Status: Ulreich’s whole status is tied to what happens with Alexander Nübel. It feels like Nübel will get at least one more year under Niko Kovac with AS Monaco (barring a complete unraveling).

BFW prediction: Contract through 2023.

Serge Gnabry

  • Contract ends: 2023
  • Status: Like we heard yesterday, a deal looks close to being complete on an extension. A deal could be completed as soon as Friday, but a formal announcement could take a while.
  • BFW prediction: Contract extension through 2026.

Kingsley Coman

  • Contract ends: 2023
  • Status: The Frenchman wants “appreciation” and money...lots of it. It is currently “questionable” that the club will retain Coman and some signs say that Bayern Munich is “likely” to sell Coman next summer — so the club can at least get something in return for him.
  • BFW prediction: Sold in the summer of 2023.

Manuel Neuer

  • Contract ends: 2023
  • Status: Neuer’s status is “complicated.” At 35-years-old, the length of Neuer’s next contract is the primary sticking point — as it was last time the player and the club did this dance. The goalkeeper’s age is what is driving the uncertainty of the situation.
  • BFW prediction: Contract extension through 2025.

Thomas Müller

  • Contract ends: 2023
  • Status: Reaching a new deal with Müller “will not be a problem.” Like Neuer, though the duration of a new contract is the issue. The good part is that Müller feels like appreciated and like an important part of the squad.
  • BFW prediction: Contract extension through 2025.

Robert Lewandowski

  • Contract ends: 2023
  • Status: Lewandowski wants a new deal with the club. At 33-years-old, the striker is still in excellent shape and terrific form. What the Polish Hitman wants most, though, is to be sure he will be an important part of the squad. This seems to be a major sticking point and a nod to the rumors that Bayern Munich was eyeing up Borussia Dortmund phenom Erling Haaland.
  • BFW prediction: Contract extension through 2025.

Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting

Contract ends: 2023

Status: At 32-years-old, Choupo has been putting in excellent performances consistently. As Lewnadowski’s back-up, you really could not ask for much more. Still, it seems unlikely that Bayern Munich will ride with two strikers in the twilight of their respective careers.

BFW prediction: Choupo leaves on a free transfer in 2023 after his current deal runs out to pave the way for a younger player.
