Paris Saint-Germain has been trying for a long time to earn their coveted Champions League trophy. They have done this mostly through massive transfer fees and major acquisitions. This hasn’t worked yet, but will Lionel Messi be enough this year?

French legend Robert Pires has his doubts about the PSG model of business and recommends they try to replicate Bayern Munich’s model of business.

“I admire this club, which has a clear philosophy and proves again and again that the FC Bayern institution stands above every player. Whether Manuel Neuer, Robert Lewandowski or Joshua Kimmich, none of them are more important than FC Bayern,” Pires told kicker explaining the strength of FC Bayern.

In contrast, at PSG “they never talk about the club, but always about individual players like Kylian Mbappé, Lionel Messi or Neymar. That’s what keeps bothering me. In this regard, the Parisians should orientate themselves towards FC Bayern if they want to achieve their goals internationally.”

In essence Pires is saying that if PSG wants to achieve this mindset, they need to move away from brand superstars such as Neymar. There are clashing egos in Paris and you can’t win automatically with world-class talent. You need to build a team that meshes together and cares about chemistry.

Pires compared the team with Real Madrid from 2003 to 2007 with incredible superstars including Luis Figo, Ronaldo, David Beckham, Zinedine Zidane and Raul. With all this talent they still couldn’t win a title, even though people believed that they would dominate Europe.

The former Arsenal FC winger claims “for the dream to really come true, Paris Saint-Germain has to form a unit on the pitch. That is still not the case today and it is definitely the biggest construction site for Mauricio Pochettino at the moment.”

Robert Pires went on to compliment several Bayern players including Manuel Neuer, Robert Lewandowski, and the midfield duo of Joshua Kimmich and Leon Goretzka. Is the PSG model sustainable? Or are they just throwing money away at this point? Although some fans criticize Bayern for their lack of transfer spending they might just be the best-operated team in Europe. However, it won’t be so easy for other teams to simply replicate Bayern’s model.
