Antonio Di Salvo hired as Germany’s U-21 coach, Hermann Gerland to assist

Germany has found a replacement for Stefan Kuntz.

In release from the DFB, the federation has hired Antonio Di Salvo to lead the U-21 squad. Former Bayern Munich assistant coach Hermann “Tiger” Gerland will hold the same position with the U-21s:

Antonio Di Salvo will be the new head coach of the U21 national team and will receive a contract until 2023. This was confirmed today in a digital meeting of the DFB Presidium. Long-time assistant coach Di Salvo is taking over from Stefan Kuntz , who signed a contract as Turkish national coach at the beginning of the week. Hermann Gerland, who has been a scout for the DFB since August 2021, will act as the new assistant coach.

“I would like to thank the DFB Presidium and the sporting management around Oliver Bierhoff, Hansi Flick, Joti Chatzialexiou and Meikel Schönweitz for the trust they have placed in us and I am looking forward to the upcoming tasks with an outstanding team of coaches and functions Hermann Gerland is ideally complemented,” said Di Salvo. “Our common goal is to continue the successful path of the U-21 national team and bring in my own ideas-Actions. Because all of this has shaped the public image of the U-21 national team in recent years.”

Oliver Bierhoff, Director of National Teams and Academy is happy to have settle don such a quality coach.

“The U21 and senior national teams have grown closer and closer together in my management over the past few years. We want to continue on this path in order to return to the top together. Hansi Flick, Joti Chatzialexiou, Meikel Schönweitz and I quickly agreed that with Toni Di Salvo we already have the right successor for Stefan Kuntz at the DFB. We want to continuously develop continuity in our coaching staff and our own people and trust them,” said Bierhoff. “We are sure that Toni will continue the successful work and set new impulses with his own ideas. His good relationship with Hansi Flick and Marcus Sorg will help us develop our talents in the U-21s.”
