Kai Havertz is starting off his second Premier League season in great fashion, but his role at Chelsea is still up for discussion.

Kai Havertz was signed by Chelsea last summer for a then-club record fee of £72million from Bayer Leverkusen. His first season in the Premier League had some bumps and it has taken some time for him to settle in at Stamford Bridge. Now in his sophomore season, he is looking more established in England.

Havertz netted the game-winning goal in the Champions League final to write his name down in history. This has without a doubt, done wonders for his confidence and earned praise from the fans. One thing that is uncertain is his position under Thomas Tuchel.

The German attacker has played in several positions for Chelsea since making the move, but has arguably been at his best in one of the two roles behind the 9 in a 3-4-2-1 formation. Newly appointed Germany manager Hansi Flick has revealed the conversations he has had with Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel about how to get the most out of Havertz. “I exchanged ideas with Thomas Tuchel. I can well imagine that he can also play in the centre,” Flick said in an interview with Sport Bild.

“In my opinion, his best position is between the nine and the 10 and have the freedom to drop and move fluid between the two positions. I like to have him in high positions, I don’t want to have him behind the ball and he feels comfortable in between the lines and in narrow pockets.” said Tuchel explaining what he thinks Havertz’s best role will be going forward.

As for Havertz, he showed uncertainty about where his best position is back when he was being used as a false nine under Tuchel. “I play somewhere up front – number nine, number 10, something in between – to be honest, I don’t know 100%,” Havertz told Chelsea’s media team back in May.

What matters is that Havertz is taking an open approach to his football and is willing to adapt and learn different positions under a new manager. The German attacker is doing the right things and can see the progress being made.

As for Hansi Flick, he now has a hard decision to make. Where should he deploy the Bayer Leverkusen prodigy? Flick will certainly have some great consultation by his fellow German manager, but much is unknown as Flick has only just started to get his hands on the national team and we have yet to see Flick’s Germany in action. Regardless of where Flick uses Havertz, he certainly has included him in his plans somewhere.
