Dutch midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum played for Liverpool for the past five seasons, and he left the club as a free agent. Wijnaldum was a topic of quite a few transfer rumors, as news outlets linked him with a move to Bayern Munich, Inter Milan, FC Barcelona, and in the end — Paris Saint-Germain. Wijnaldum eventually chose Paris as his next destination.
In his interview with L’Equipe, he talked about the interest of other clubs and why he chose Paris Saint Germain. He told that PSG was interested in him back in 2014, but he wanted to stay with PSV and win the domestic title. They came back again in 2015, but he opted for a move to Newcastle.
After the contract negotiations with Liverpool stalled, Wijnaldum started looking for other options. He said: “I was keen on the idea of signing for Barcelona. But the negotiations lasted a while, and eventually, PSG came forward. Unlike six years ago, the club showed its desire to have me. It was time for me to see something else.”
He also admitted that Bayern Munich contacted him, but he was already in advanced talks with Barca and PSG. “There were discussions with Bayern Munich but they started further back. I also spoke with Inter Milan, who made a very good impression on me, the sort that as a player you want to have.”
In the end, Wijnaldum chose PSG, and he explained that he was convinced by the project they are building. So far, he has been a frequent starter for PSG this season and is playing well under Mauricio Pochettino.
