Former Bayern Munich manager, Niko Kovač, confirms that Bayern loanee, Alexander Nübel, will continue to start matches for AS Monaco. In an interview with L’Equipe (as reported by Twitter page @iMiaSanMia), the German manager said that, “Alex needs matches, rhythm. He needs to play consecutive matches. He will be our goalkeeper tomorrow (Thursday, in Europa League).”
When asked about the goals conceded this season, Kovač defended Nübel saying, “I think he is performing well. He conceded several goals that he couldn’t do anything about. Of the seven that we conceded in Ligue 1, four or five were goals were on one against one. It’s hard to be decisive in these kinds of situations.” He went on further to say, “So far, he hasn’t had a lot of opportunities to show his qualities because we haven’t conceded a lot of chances. He needs clean sheets. He needs more support from the players in front of him, not just from the defenders but from the whole team, to better protect our goal.”
Kovač finished the interview optimistically, “He needs a bit more support. But I’m happy with Alex, he’s a smart guy, he’s going to show his qualities because he’s a very good goalkeeper.”
It is great to see that Kovač has confidence in Nübel’s development and abilities, and that he trusts Nübel, continually giving him opportunities to play in both domestic and European competitions. This isn’t exactly what Bayern will want to continue to see for the remainder of this loan.
