Per Italian newspapers Gazzetta dello Sport and IlMilanista (as captured by Sport1), AC Milan are planning to make a move for Liverpool and former Bayern Munich midfielder Thiago Alcântara. The Rossenari could be willing to offer Ivorian midfielder Franck Kessié as part of a player-swap deal in exchange for Thiago. Kessié, whose contract with Milan expires next summer, is being reportedly courted by the likes of Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain.
In order to avoid losing Kessié for nothing, the report claims that Milan bosses Paolo Maldini and Frederic Massara are considering proposing an “equal exchange”, meaning a deal involving no transfer fee, in the coming January window.
Thiago arrived at Liverpool last year after playing a pivotal role in Bayern Munich’s 2019/2020 UEFA Champions League-winning campaign. However, the 30-year-old had an enduring start in the English Premier League that saw him miss almost the entirety of the first half of 2020/21 season with COVID-19 infection and a knee injury.
Although the Spaniard is yet to nail down a spot in Klopp’s starting-XI, he recently delivered an encouraging performance in Liverpool’s 3-0 win over Leeds United. A straight-up swap deal with Milan might seem unrealistic, given that Liverpool can look to acquire Kessié for free next year and that Thiago still has three years left on his current deal.
