Report: Bayern Munich finalizing transfer of a 21-year-old French talent (Update: Toulouse confirm €5m bid, but want more)

What a puzzling piece of news to come out of France today.

Here’s something unexpected — an actual transfer rumor! Per reports out of France (which are now being corroborated by multiple sources in Germany) Bayern Munich are trying to finalize the signing of Amine Adli, a 21-year-old French forward who plays for Ligue 2 side Toulouse. The original report comes from Loic Tanzi of RMC Sport, who claims that the Bavarians only need to reach an agreement with Adli’s parent club for the transfer to go ahead.

Per the reporting, Adli would apparently sign on as a fourth winger, although Transfermarkt shows that he played across the front line for Toulouse in the French second division last season, though his main position was as a center forward. Bayern must see something in him, because 8 goals and 7 assists in 2,519 minutes is nothing to write home about, especially for a 21-year-old. This wouldn’t be the first time that the club have gambled on a slightly older player from the lower divisions — Joshua Kimmich was 21 when he joined Bayern from RB Leipzig in 2015. Most people will agree that it worked out that time.

Maybe this is part of Brazzo’s master plan. With Adli coming in, he could slot into the 4th winger role and possibly mature into a solid option for the team. If he does, then it’ll be easier for Bayern to proceed with contract negotiations for Kingsley Coman, as the Frenchman’s bargaining position will undoubtedly get weaker. Also, given how injury prone Serge Gnabry and Leroy Sane can be, having more backups is always a good thing.

However, what does this mean for youngsters like Jamal Musiala and Armindo Sieb, who were supposed to get a shot at the winger spot this year? Well, if Nagelsmann really wants to keep things fresh, he could give all the youngsters a shot at the position, turning Bayern into the footballing version of the Hunger Games.

Or ... and hear me out here ... this is Brazzo’s attempt to pull off another Alphonso Davies. Phonzie was purchased as a left winger but converted to a left-back. Could Adli be the right-back we’ve all been looking for? According to Max Bielefeld of Sky Germany, he would be a pretty cheap acquisition:

Toulouse’s President has already admitted that Adli will leave the club this summer. Is the youngster coming to Munich?

Now Falk says the rumor is true. What’s next?

Update #2

Toulouse’s President all but confirmed Bayern’s interest in an interview, albeit in a really roundabout way. Basically he said that Bayern have convinced the player and Adli has rejected numerous top teams to come to his current decision. However, the clubs still remain far apart on a deal, and the president is putting a lot of pressure on the player:

Will Bayern be able to cough up the cash? Will we revisit this transfer in 12 months time? Or will there another twist in the tale?

We'll keep bringing you updates as the story develops.
