Are five players really playing for their futures this season?

The first half of the 2020/2021 season saw a lot of good things with Bayern Munich, but the second half of the campaign left some fans and pundits alike questioning a few of the young players on the roster.

Specifically, kicker named five players that it thinks are facing make or break season:

  • Benjamin Pavard
  • Alphonso Davies
  • Niklas Süle
  • Serge Gnabry
  • Leroy Sane

Pavard has been in the crosshairs of the fans since a slow, injury-plagued start to last season, but the Frenchman turned his season around in the second half. Still, memories on long in the fanbase — and apparently in the front office — as rumors have been rampant about the club wanting a new option at the position. The pundits at kicker say that Pavard was not enough of a threat offensively and did not do near enough defensively. While that certainly could be said for the first half of the season, it appeared that Pavard had gotten on track in the second half.

As for Sane and Gnabry, the winger duo were both wildly inconsistent last season. Both have immense talent, but have been prone to periods of disappearing. For Gnabry, his contract runs through 2023 and the club will have to make a decision over the course of this season if it wants to extend the Germany international. Once thought to be a shoot-in extension, Gnabry reportedly wants to be paid Sane money — and Bayern Munich might need to see a lot more consistency for that to happen.

In the eyes of the front office, Sane had a year of a grace period to acclimate to life at the club and to fully heal from his ACL injury suffered in 2019. The leash, however, might not be as long for Sane this season. Though he made significant strides in committing to playing defense over the course of last season, the winger did not live up to the hype or the exorbitant salary. Even Captain Ahab himself, sporting director Hasan “Brazzo” Salihamidzic has already stated the club needs to see more from his White Whale Sane this season.

Süle is another player who is really in a tough spot. With his deal set to expire in 2022, Bayern Munch needs to extend the defender or sell him within the next few weeks. Otherwise, the 25-year-old star could leave the club for free, which would be a massive mistake for a number of reasons. The pundits at kicker simply think Süle made poor decisions last season and will have to show that it was a fluke during this campaign.

The last name on the list was Davies, which might surprise some fans. An enigma, who burst onto the scene during the 2019/2020 season, Davies looked certain to be a star-in-the-making. Last season, however, Davies suffered through multiple injuries and had some of the worst games of his relatively brief Bayern Munich career. Positionally, Davies struggled at times and the Canadian will need to show — here’s that word again — consistency.
