Eighteen-year-old Emilio Ballack, the son of Bayern Munich and Chelsea legend Michael Ballack, was tragically killed in a quad accident in the early hours of August 5. He was reportedly riding off-road near his family’s holiday home in Troia, south of Lisbon, when he lost control of the vehicle and was crushed beneath it (Mirror, Telegraph).
“The quad was on an uneven piece of land and at this stage it appears to have gone backwards and as it did fell on top of the victim and crushed him,” a local police officer told the Mirror. Ballack could not be revived and was declared dead at the scene.
Police have thus far declined to confirm Ballack’s identity. A spokesman said, “An 18-year-old man has died following an accident at a private property in Troia. We received an alert shortly after 2am this morning. I am not at liberty to go into details about the identify of the dead man. I can confirm he was on the vehicle he had his accident in alone.”
The younger Ballack had shared photos from his vacation on Instagram as recently as this past weekend. His account now appears to be offline.
Chelsea has already expressed its condolences on social media.
