After a fairly lusterless start to his stint as Bayern Munich manager, Julian Nagelsmann won his first competitive match on Tuesday and helped the team clinch their maiden silverware of the season as they beat Borussia Dortmund 1-3 in the DFL-Supercup.

Speaking to the press post-game, the players shared their exhilaration of victory but stayed true to their Bavarian mentality of insatiable hunger for more.

“The atmosphere was great, I really enjoyed playing in front of fans again. Dortmund showed they’re a great team. We wanted to show our quality in this prestigious game and we did it well. In the end, we deserved to win”, Leon Goretzka commented on the victory.

Joshua Kimmich, who crossed swords with Marco Reus mid-way through the game, shared his thoughts on the game along the lines of his partner in midfield. He said, “It was an interesting and very intense game. Both teams played a very high pressing game. We had a few more chances and deserved to win. It was a good game and we enjoyed being out there. Against Dortmund, a team with great quality, winning counts double.”

Robert Lewandowski’s stunning header that opened the score line was made possible by a great cross from Serge Gnabry towards the end of the first half. The victory and the added silverware is a confidence booster for him, said the 26-year-old.

“It was a great game. We are happy, that gives you self-confidence. Today we were better. It’s always a top game against Dortmund. You want to win the cup. How we played today was also a sign.”

Bayern have a hectic schedule coming up as they play three games in a single week – Bundesliga games against FC Köln (22nd) and Hertha Berlin (28th), and a mid-week DFB Pokal tie against Bremer SV. Nagelsmann and his men will be looking forward to create and maintain a winning streak.
