Bayern Munich clinched the DFL-Supercup with a 3-1 victory over Borussia Dortmund. Here are the BFW Match Awards:
Jersey Swap: Marco Reus
The Borussia Dortmund captain was in great form today putting pressure on all match; involved in nearly every Dortmund shot on goal. Marco Reus also brought the intensity getting into scuffles with Joshua Kimmich and Corentin Tolisso trying to set the tone for his team. Reus had a 1v1 opportunity denied by Manuel Neuer early in the match but struck back with a beautiful outside curler for BVB’s first goal.

Der Bomber: Robert Lewandowski
In competition with Neuer for MOTM honors, Robert Lewandowski had a phenomenal game. He had early chances that didn’t go in but ended the day with a pair of goals. His first goal to open the scoring was a thunderous header and the second punishing a sloppy pass by Manuel Akanji near goal. As always, his work rate and swapping runs outside created chances for the rest of the attack.

Der Fußballgott: Joshua Kimmich
It was a quiet, albeit not bad day from the Bayern Munich midfield duo. I can’t think of a truly memorable moment from either, just a solid workman performance from both Joshua Kimmich and Leon Goretzka. Kimmich seemed to put in a significant defensive effort today, earning him the nod for me.
Der Kaiser: Niklas Süle
Niklas Süle and Dayot Upamecano each had a terrific game minimizing Erling Haaland. The Norwegian was never going to be completely taken out and required some 1v1 Neuer magic to keep him off the score sheet, but the Bayern center-backs were on him all match long. Süle played him smartly, often pushing him wide to have help from Davies and matching physicality big man to big man. It’s tough task to bully the 6’4” striker but Süle bodied him up and picked up an early yellow for his tough defense.
Meister of the Match: Manuel Neuer
What more can you say about Manuel Neuer? He was in full sweeper-keeper form today. He had ridiculous 1v1 saves on Reus and Haaland early in the match to keep from falling behind and came 40 yards out of goal to snuff out another opportunity colliding with Haaland. He quite simply kept Bayern in the match, what a performance.
