Prior to Bayern Munich’s 1-1 draw with Borussia Mönchengladbach in the Bundesliga on Friday, not many fans were anticipating that Josip Stanisic would get the call for the starting XI.
The 21-year-old defender took advantage of the opportunity, however, and had a terrific performance. In fact, Stanisic earned praise from more than just fans or the media: Bayern Munich head coach Julian Nagelsmann lauded the player’s effort.
“I was very happy with Stani, he did very well. He got involved in the attack well, initiated two situations well, had a chance himself. He also defended well and did what he showed in preparation. That he is a very reliable player,” Nagelsmann told Sport Bild.
Hansi Flick brought Stanisic up last season for a surprise start against Union Berlin and the youngster did not disappoint. Now, Nagelsmann looks to have enough confidence in the defender to deploy him at a number of positions including right-back, left-back, center-back, and defensive midfield.
If Stanisic can continue his upward trend, his presence could alleviate the perceived need for another right-back on the roster.
