Per a new report from Bild, Julian Nagelsmann spent one on one time with Leroy Sane after Bayern Munich’s main training session on Monday. Per the report, the pair worked on finishing in front of goal for Sane. Nagelsmann sent in crosses from the right flank and Sane worked on finishing with both his feet, and his head. The mini session lasted for about 15 minutes after the squad’s main training session had concluded and Sane scored most of the chances that Nagelsmann sent in.
This mini session between Nagelsmann and Sane came just two days after Nagelsmann’s assistant, Dino Toppmöller spent a solid 30 minutes after Bayern’s “A” team vs. “B” scrimmage speaking with Sane. Bild even revealed that Sane has been spending a decent amount of time speaking with Bayern’s new team psychologist Dr. Maximilian Pelka to try and keep his head in the right place. There’s a sense that his performances in training so far this preseason have been positive, and Nagelsman, his assistants, and Sane’s teammates have been taking notice and encouraging him. Thomas Muller is said to be one of the players really advocating for Sane, taking notice of his positive form in preseason.
For Sane, the positive reinforcement from Nagelsmann and his teammates can be incredibly refreshing. He had a touch and go campaign last season at best, and he never seemed to be able to string together positive performances without having a few quiet matches in between. We’ve seen what he’s capable of when he’s on his day, but his lackluster performances for Germany at the Euros didn’t exactly shift momentum in the right direction coming into a new season for Bayern under a new manager. Last season, Hansi Flick had spoken with him more than once to try to get him to show more defensive commitment on the flank, to which he did respond to, but he still never really quite hit his full stride.

Hopefully for Bayern, Sane is able to transfer his training form onto the pitch. With the work Nagelsmann has personally done with him, combined with the vociferous encouragement, there’s a strong chance Sane could be in the starting lineup against Borussia Monchengladbach on Friday. Nagelsmann is expecting more goals and assists from him this season, and the season opener against ‘Gladbach would be a great start!
