When Dietmar Hamann looks at the Bundesliga this season, he does not see Bayern Munich as the big, red juggernaut ready to rampage through the league. In fact, in an exclusive interview with British Gambler that was made available to Bavarian Football Works, Hamaan thinks Bayern Munich defense will take a step back and that Borussia Dortmund and...Bayer Leverkusen could be the top challengers to the Bavarians.
“David Alaba and Jerome Boateng have left and there are no guarantees Niklas Süle will rediscover his form and Dayot Upamecano arrives from Leipzig after a modest season – he makes too many mistakes for me,” Hamann said. “There are contract issues to be resolved and grounds for player unrest, they aren’t as strong this season.”
As for which clubs could present the biggest challenge to Bayern Munich’s reign atop the league, Hamann thinks Borussia Dortmund is the obvious choice. For a dark horse candidate, Hamann went with Bayer Leverkusen.
“Dortmund, with Erling Haaland leading the line is the obvious threat, but don’t rule out Leverkusen, who look a great side to mount a challenge,” said Hamann. “They’re an attractive side, have got a great manager in Gerardo Seoane, a top striker in Patrick Schick, youngster Paulinho is fit and classy center-back Edmond Tapsoba, who is poised to be the next big thing in German football.”
