Bayern Munich manager Julian Nagelsmann stated his commitment to using a back-four earlier this week, but that did not stop him from toying with a back-three at his Thursday practice session.
In Nagelsmann’s training, the new boss used Dayot Upamecano, Tanguy Nianzou, and Josip Stanisic as his three center-backs with Omar Richards and Bouna Sarr as the wing-backs:
Yesterday, Julian Nagelsmann used a back 4 in training with Upamecano and Nianzou at centre-back. Today, he changed to a back 3 with Stanišić, Nianzou and Upamecano at centre-back. Sarr played as right wing-back, Omar Richards as left wing-back [Bild]

The group, of course, did not have many of the players that Nagelsmann figures to count on like Niklas Süle, Lucas Hernandez, Benjamin Pavard, and Alphonso Davies, who will likely change the composition of the back-line quite a bit.
Nagelsmann wants his team to be flexible, so he will likely play multiple formations during the team’s preseason slate of friendlies. The good thing for the former RB Leipzig and Hoffenheim manager is that his roster is loaded with players who shift between positions pretty seamlessly.
From Süle to Pavard to Hernandez to Joshua Kimmich to Jamal Musiala and quite a few others, Nagelsmann will be able to slide players in and out of positions at-will.
