Niklas Sule is one of a small list of Bayern Munich players currently trying to negotiate new contracts with the club. Both Leon Goretzka and Joshua Kimmich are in similar situations with their contracts, but their status in the squad makes it more likely that their contracts will definitely be renewed. For Sule, his current contract at Bayern expires at the end of next season, but he faces stiff competition for a place in Julian Nagelsmann’s starting eleven with Lucas Hernandez and newcomer Dayot Upamecano.
In a new report from kicker, it was revealed that Hasan Salihamidzic has confirmed discussions between the club and Sule’s camp, but that the discussions have gone in “one direction or the other.” Once he returns from holiday following Germany’s exit from the Euros, talks will start to intensify. In Nagelsmann’s first official press conference as Bayern manager, Brazzo was present and when he was asked about Sule’s situation, he said, “We talked a lot about it. We’re looking forward to Niklas. We need every player.”
Hernandez will be sidelined for four-to-six weeks after a successful operation on his knee, but once he’s fully fit, the assumption is that he would slot right into the starting lineup alongside compatriot Upamecano. This leaves Sule as the odd man out. He already has the personnel connection with Nagelsmann from their time together at TSG Hoffenheim, but Hernandez and Upamecano is the preferred center back pairing.
When Sule arrives back at Sabener Strasse, he will be able to speak with Nagelsmann directly to get a clear idea of how he’s planning for this upcoming season with him. At that point, Sule, his agents, Brazzo, and Nagelsmann will have a better idea of what will come of his contract situation.
“We are in contact with his management and have had talks in one direction or the other. But first of all we are happy that he comes back. He comes back healthy. And then we will discuss with the trainer how things will proceed. Everyone, too Niklas, has the chance to perform well for FC Bayern, to show himself to the coach. And then we’ll look further,” Brazzo explained.
