All four players at the Tokyo Olympics representing Bayern Munich Frauen will be playing in the knockout rounds on Friday. Sweden, Japan, and the Netherlands all advanced out of their group, some with more ease than others.
Sweden breezed through a not-so-easy group, taking all nine points available against the United States, Australia, and New Zealand. Hanna Glas and Sofia Jakobsson started the first two matches in the big wins against the USA and Australia and were given a rest in the final match of the group against New Zealand. They face Japan in the Quarterfinals.
Japan barely got into the knockout rounds thanks to a third place finish in their group (and the IOC’s poor structure for the women’s tournament by not having 12 teams like the men’s tournament). Saki Kumagai started and went the distance in all three games for the Japanese. They play Sweden in the Quarterfinals.
Lineth Beerensteyn advanced top of their group, putting beatdowns on Zambia and China on their way to the next round. Beerensteyn scored three goals in the group stage, starting once and coming off the bench twice. They play the United States in the Quarterfinals.
