In what could be a bargaining chip in the contract extension of Kingsley Coman, Bayern Munich announced that he will be donning the number 11 jersey this season onwards. In the five seasons since his arrival at the club, the Frenchman finally moves on to a traditional winger’s number.

The Bayern 11 kit has a rich history, having seen the likes of Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, Mehmet Scholl, Bixente Lizarazu, Ze Roberto and Lukas Podolski to name a few. Having said that, its recent history has been a little sketchy. Xherdan Shaqiri, Douglas Costa and James Rodriguez, who despite having some periods of brilliance never looked like they were in it for the long run with the club — giving the number 11 a ‘cursed’ vibe. This announcement coming at a time of uncertainty regarding Coman’s future adds some spice to the ‘cursed’ story.

King has had a perfect streak donning the ‘29’ shirt at Bayern so far, winning five league titles out of five and has seen incredible growth in that period. He is a perfect candidate to break the alleged ‘curse’ of the 11. With the looming contract extension saga of several core players, we can only hope that the club have a plan in place and this number change is just the start.
