With Real Madrid formally presenting former David Alaba earlier today, former Bayern Munich defender Markus Babbel reflected on how much the Bavarians will miss the Austrian star.
“To lose him on a free transfer is a bit of a disaster, the personality, and his ability as a player, but I can understand if he wants a different challenge,” Babbel told NetBet. “The way he left was not good, I don’t know if it’s David Alaba’s fault or Bayern Munich’s fault, but it wasn’t a good situation.”
Babbel thinks losing a long-term player like Alaba is a bad look.
“I do not like that he’s been here for over ten years and he’s leaving because he supposedly wants too much money. Real Madrid will be paying him the money and he’s doing what he thinks is best for him,” Babbel said. “I think he did not want to leave, but then the conversation between him and the club went so badly that he had to go. It’s sad to see, but they’ve brought in (Dayot) Upamecano who is a massive talent to fill the role.”
Babbel is expecting Niklas Sule to regain his form and fight for the opportunity to start on the backline.
“Niklas Süle had a bad season, but he will come back a lot stronger and there are a lot of young players coming through as well,” said Babbel. “It is quite interesting how they will handle this and if the younger players who can come through to the level Bayern Munich need them to be.”
