Euro 2020 has come and gone, and football didn’t go home, it went Rome. Italy were crowned champions after defeating England in penalties at Wembley, capping off what was a truly remarkable tournament where the action crescendo’d just as well as Andrea Bocelli’s rendition of Nessun Dorma in the opening ceremony at the Stadio Olimpico ahead of Itlay vs. Turkey on June 11th. There were surprises, letdowns, and everything in between. A lot of players had unexpectedly fantastic tournaments, and others, not so much. Ultimately, it started in Rome and was brought back to Rome with Roberto Mancini’s Azzurri side, who many had pegged to be this tournament’s so-called “dark horses.”

From Germany’s perspective, the joy of escaping group F along with France and Portugal was quickly quelled when Joachim Low’s men were knocked out by England in the 2-0, round of 16 loss at Wembley. While it may have been a disappointment, Germany can now look forward to a new era under Hansi Flick, where he will first pick up World Cup qualifying for Qatar 2022 in September.
