In a recent interview with Bild, Bayern Munich manager Julian Nagelsmann insisted that he was not worried about his team’s depth on the backline.

The injury news of late has not been assuring by any means for the former RB Leipzig and Hoffenheim boss, as both Alphonso Davies and Lucas Hernandez are expected to miss the preseason and probably the start of the new campaign.

New signee Omar Richards will likely get the nod to start at left-back, which is probably less-than-ideal for the Bavarians at this stage of the player’s young career.

“We have a lot of top-class players there,” said Nagelsmann. “Dayot Upamecano and Tanguy Nianzou. Or Lucas Hernández, who is unfortunately injured now, but whom I think very highly of. I am not going to determine a group that always plays. We have players who have the drive to perform perfectly and always to be outstanding.”

Nagelsmann will need his defensive group to be on-point early in the season. While Bremer SV might not present much of a challenge in the DFB-Pokal, Borussia Mönchengladbach will be a formidable opponent in the Bundesliga opener.
