In hindsight, Bayern Munich’s signing of Omar Richards from Reading FC could prove to be highly beneficially given that fact that Julian Nagelsmann might very well have to start him at left-back right from the beginning of the season.
Both Alphonso Davies and Lucas Hernandez have sustained injuries on international duty that will likely keep them out of the beginning of the Bundesliga campaign for Bayern. Add to that, David Alaba’s departure to Real Madrid this summer and Nagelsmann is running rather short on left back options; Richards is the obvious solution for the beginning of the season.
Richards is already making a positive impression in training at Sabener Strasse, especially in the eyes of sporting director Hasan “Brazzo” Salihamidzic. Brazzo recently stated in a press conference that the club is already impressed with all of the qualities he’s shown in training thus far:
️ Hasan #Salihamidžić: "Wir sind sehr froh, dass @OTRichards_ hier in München ist. Er hat viele Stärken und hat sie sofort eingebracht. Der Trainer arbeitet viel individuell mit ihm und er saugt alles auf. Wir sind sicher, dass wir sehr viel Freude an ihm haben werden." pic.twitter.com/PtLCCGXg3y

We are very happy that @OTRichards_is here in Munich. He has many strengths and immediately brought them to bear. The trainer works a lot with him individually and he soaks everything up. We are sure that we will enjoy him a lot.
For Richards, it’s likely that he will be the beneficiary of the injuries to both Davies and Hernandez. Unless Nagelsmann decides to start with a back-three system, Richards would the the odds-on favorite to start at left back at the beginning of the campaign. Of course, Bouna Sarr could also be an option, though he is predominantly a right back and his future at the club is still in question. In that sense, a lot could happen between now and when the transfer window closes. Bayern Campus product Josip Stanisic is also an option as the 21-year-old has just recently signed his first professional contract with the club. Brazzo is a big fan of him, but like Sarr, he usually plays as a right-back, not a left back, so he might be more of a risk with Richards as the main option.
