In an interview with kicker (as captured by Twitter account @iMiaSanMia), former Bayern Munich manager — and all-around legend — Jupp Heynckes gave his thoughts on the European Championships tournament and how impressed he was with Italy. Needless to say, the 2013 treble-winner was impressed with Italy.
“It was a tactical game and exciting until the end. The best team of the tournament deservedly won. Italy deserve respect and sympathy,” Heynckes said. “Roberto Mancini has managed to bring back harmony to the team on and off the pitch. This team is a unit. I get this impression when I see the players sing the anthem. The coach is the architect, he was crucial.”
Aside of Italy as a team, Heynckes came away impressed with several individual players
“Spain’s Pedri is an extraordinary talent. Italy’s (Lorenzo) Insigne, (Giorgio) Chiellini, (Leonardo) Bonucci. Spain have convinced with their young, renewed team. The future belongs to them,” Heynckes said.
