Former Bayern Munich defender, Javi Martinez recently posted photos on his Instagram, documenting his official presentation at this new club — Qatar Sport Club. In the first picture of the post, there is a man in a Sheikh robe — likely an executive of the club — hold with Javi a yellow jersey with a black 8 on the back. Seeing Javi play in anything but Bavarian red after nine seasons in Munich is going to be strange, but it will be a little off-putting to see him play in rival colors of yellow and black.
Something not as obvious, but reported by Tz, was a comment made by Martinez’ former Bayern teammate, James Rodriguez. He wrote “the Sheikh Martinez” with a couple smiling emojis. After becoming familiar with the Bavarian culture, Martinez was seen wearing lederhosen at certain club functions. Who knows, maybe Martinez will swap out the lederhosen for some Sheikh robes while in Qatar.
Other comments on Javi’s Instagram post were very positive, wishing him luck in his new endeavors. However, there were plenty of comments that were not as happy with his move to Qatar, as many criticize the nation’s disregard of human rights, especially in the buildup to the World Cup next year. Comments like “bitter aftertaste”, “seriously?”, and “you sold your soul” flooded the comment section. Many other simply included barfing, money, or angry emojis.
