Bayern Munich Frauen will be represented by four players at the Tokyo Olympics this summer. Unfortunately, none of those players will be wearing the Germany shirt, as they failed to qualify for this tournament at the last Women’s World Cup.
Sweden will have Hanna Glas and new signing Sofia Jakobsson. The Netherlands will feature Lineth Beerensteyn. Japan’s captain will be new Bayern signing Saki Kumagai.
The tournament is also littered with former Bayern players.
Australia: Emily Gielnik
Japan: Mana Iwabuchi
Netherlands: Stefanie van der Gragt, Vivianne Miedema, Jill Roord
New Zealand: Ali Riley
Sweden: Amanda Ilestedt, Fridolina Rolfö
United States: Kristie Mewis
The women’s tournament is assigned Groups E, F, and G. Why? Because, the IOC makes the men’s tournament Groups A, B, C, and D. They also haven’t expanded the women’s tournament to 16 teams to match the men’s tournament. Come on, IOC.
The Olympics tournament will stretch from July 21 through August 6. The Frauen Bundesliga doesn’t begin until August 27.
