Bayern Munich star Manuel Neuer picked up his 100th cap in Germany’s 7-1 victory over Latvia and the goalkeeper is still in shock.
“It’s unbelievable for me. There are some friends who have been with us from the start. Lots of players too. It’s unbelievable that I’m now in three digits,” Neuer said (as captured by Tz). “We played a good game of the way. It was good for self-confidence.”
About the only thing that sullied Neuer’s day was the goal Germany gave up. Latvia’s Aleksejs Saveljevs scored a screamer that the 2014 World Cup winner could do nothing about.
“The goal we conceded was amazing, but we have to pay more attention,” said Neuer. “We played a good game. Sure, against a weaker opponent, but it was important for confidence.”
That confidence could be key. Neuer knows that getting by France and Portugal will not be easy — but it is doable.
“I have a very good impression of the team,” Neuer said. We trust each other and we know that we have strong opponents, but it’s also uncomfortable to play against us — I have a very good feeling about this.”
