Bad news if you’re a Bayern Munich fan. Per RMC Sport, the reason why Lucas Hernandez was subbed off against Wales last night was due to a possible knee injury. The Frenchman will undergo tests later today to find out the extent of the damage. While France has plenty of depth to make up for his absence, a long term injury to Lucas at this stage would be devastating for his club, given how important he is to the future of the team’s defense.
Hernandez does have a history of knee problems in the past. He injured his MCL (medial collateral ligament) even before joining Bayern from Atletico Madrid, and the transfer had to be rushed through so he could get the treatment that he needed. The Frenchman spent much of the 2019/2020 season recovering from that injury, and only managed to regain form in the latter half of 2020.
Hopefully, this is just a precautionary measure by the French doctors, and Lucas will be fine in the long run. With Alaba and Boateng gone, Nagelsmann needs him to lead the team’s defense. Hopefully, Deschamps will try and tap into some of France’s ludicrous depth and rest Lucas for a game or two, because based on what Germany’s doing right now, France has that game in the bag.
We’ll keep and eye on this and update the story as it develops.
Update
Lucas Hernandez has only suffered a bruise to the knee per RMC Sport. Thankfully for Bayern fans, the injury is not a cause for concern.
