While Borussia Dortmund’s Jadon Sancho has torn things up in the Bundesliga in recent seasons, just like in his recent performances vs. Bayern Munich, the Englishman has been missing from play during England’s Euros campaign. However, this time, Sancho has hardly even taken the field.
England manager Gareth Southgate relies on other attackers, namely Mason Mount, Jack Grealish, Marcus Rashford and Raheem Sterling, before placing Sancho in his lineup. For Bundesliga fans and pundits alike, this decision is simply perplexing given how Sancho is likely the best player out of the aforementioned options, at least based on club form.
Now, Bayern Munich legend Lothar Matthaus has weighed in on Sancho’s lack of minutes in an interview with Goal. Matthaus said, “If he is not good enough for England, we would like to give him a German passport! It has surprised many in Germany” and described Sancho as “one of the best players in the Bundesliga for the last two years.”
Matthaus is right and it simply is astounding how seemingly one of the world’s best wingers doesn’t even manage to be the first option off the bench for England and has even missed out on their squad entirely at times.
