We received a LOT of submissions, so thank you for your votes!

Hello and welcome to part 3 of our Fan Team of the Season lists. After our lists three weeks ago, it’s time to see who our fans picked. We’re aware that there may be bias (we are a Bayern Munich blog after all), but that’s why we do these three different lists.

Here, we will show you who you picked, compare it to who we picked and I’ll give my thoughts on your picks.

Just like our Staff vote, we received the most submissions for our Fan Overall Team of the Season. For our Staff ToTS, we had experts like Derek Rae, Raphael Honigstein, Ian Paul Joy, and Phil Bonney give their picks. For the Fan ToTS we received nearly 150 submissions.

Goalkeeper

Staff pick: Peter Gulacsi - RB Leipzig
Fan Pick: Manuel Neuer - Bayern Munich

Here begins a clear and obvious trend. It seems you all are a fan of a team called “Bayern Munich” and will pick players regardless of statlines. We will see some more egregious examples further down the line, but picking Neuer over Gulacsi is not one of those. Neuer is the best keeper in the world afterall.

Right Back

Staff pick: Christopher Trimmel - 1. FC Union Berlin
Fan Pick: Christopher Trimmel - 1. FC Union Berlin

Trimmel’s season was superb and I’m glad the fans recognized that.

Centerbacks

Staff picks: Mats Hummels - Borussia Dortmund and Maxence Lacroix - Wolfsburg
Fan Picks: Mats Hummels - Borussia Dortmund and Jerome Boateng - Bayern Munich

I personally have a problem with the second choice. I don’t know what season y’all saw from Boateng, but it was not better than Maxence Lacroix’s. The defender with the most clean sheets in the league isn’t on this list as a result.

Left Back

Staff pick: Raphaël Guerreiro - Borussia Dortmund
Fan Pick: Raphaël Guerreiro - Borussia Dortmund

After not receiving a single vote in our staff panel, Alphonso Davies somehow clocks in with 56 votes in the Fan Team of the Season. I love Phonzie, but this was not that great of a season from him. He should do better next year, but leaving Guerreiro off the list would be wrong.

Central Defensive Midfielder

Staff pick: Joshua Kimmich - Bayern Munich
Fan Pick: Joshua Kimmich - Bayern Munich

A deservedly lopsided victory, Kimmich is one of the best central midfielders in the world right now.

Central Midfielders

Staff picks: Leon Goretzka and Thomas Müller - Bayern Munich
Fan Picks: Leon Goretzka and Thomas Müller - Bayern Munich

These also make sense, but it’s the manner in which they differed from our staff list. Müller’s choice was close to unanimous in both the staff and fan votes. Goretzka, meanwhile, won far easier in this one than the staff picks. In that one, the other half of Bayern’s double pivot won by a single vote. That was clearly not the case here as Goretzka’s main competitors only earned 12% and 6% respectively.

Right Midfielder/Winger

Staff pick: Jadon Sancho - Borussia Dortmund
Fan Pick: Jadon Sancho - Borussia Dortmund

Just like with the situation at left back, after receiving zero votes in the staff picks, Leroy Sané came out with double digit support from the fans. Despite this, both he and third place finisher Silas Katompa Mvumpa of Stuttgart came nowhere close to Sancho who came up with over 50% of the vote after a down year for the Englishman.

Left Midfielder/Winger

Staff pick: Angeliño - RB Leipzig
Fan Pick: Kingsley Coman - Bayern Munich

Poor Angeliño. After receiving 54% of the votes in our staff picks, he only managed 5% in the fan voting. Kingsley Coman had a massive rebound going from having 7% of the vote in our staff poll to winning the fan poll with 45% and 67 votes. Considering this has been Coman’s best season to date, it’s not as outrageous as some of the other picks earlier in this list.

Striker

Staff picks: Robert Lewandowski - Bayern Munich
Fan Picks: Robert Lewandowski - Bayern Munich

I don’t know what’s more surprising: the fact that Lewandowski didn’t get a unanimous vote in the staff poll or that 10 of you voted for Erling Haaland in this poll. A clear victory for the Polish striker in the greatest goalscoring season in league history.

Finally, here’s a visual representation of your Fan Team of the Season
