Germany squeaked out a 2-2 draw with Hungary to advance to the knockout stage of the European Championships, but it was an unnerving affair for most fans — and the players— alike.
Ever-emotional, Bayern Munich star Joshua Kimmich could feel the pressure of the situation as Germany scuffled and fought to try and earn at least a point.
“Of course, you’re worried for a moment when it’s 2-1 in the meantime. We made it brutally difficult for ourselves to create chances and we did,” Kimmich said (as captured by Tz). “Hungary were compact and did well. We were not great at finding a solution, but we showed great morale. In the end it is only important to go through. That will also be the case for the next match and I think we have a good chance to accomplish that.”
The next match, of course, will be against England at Wembley Stadium — and Kimmich cannot wait.
“Yeah, awesome. There’s almost no better game. Whether it has to be in the round of 16 is a moot point. I hope that we have now arrived in the tournament. We have room for improvement and will show that in the next game,” Kimmich said.
