As the seconds ticked down at the Parken Stadium, the collective cheers and recognition washed over the crowd. Just a few days ago, this country was halted as they stared in petrified horror at Christian Eriksen who was in the throws of a cardiac arrest. After losing that game, they put on an inspired performance against Belgium but came up short.

Now, with the clock winding down and four goals to the good against Russia, Denmark realized they were going to overcome incredible odds. After entering the game dead bottom on 0 points, they were able to put forth a good enough effort to automatically qualify for the Round of 16.

Just a few hours earlier in Romania, Austria was celebrating something they never did in the Euros: qualify for the knockout stages. It’s something they haven’t done since making the semifinals of the 1954 World Cup in Switzerland. Now, they look forward to facing Italy in the coming days.

Group C: UKR 0-1 AUT [ 21’ Baumgartner ]
