Bayern Munich star Niklas Süle was happy to see players like Thomas Müller and Mats Hummels back with the German national team — even if the latter means there is more competition for playing time along the backline.
“There’s always competition for places in the national team, especially now there’s 26 players in the squad,” Süle said to the DFB website. “Everyone wants to play, so it’s nothing new.”
Süle said the returning players fit right in with the existing group.
“I haven’t noticed so. I’ve known the pair of them for a long time and it just feels like they were never away,” Süle said. “It’s not like players here feel more important than others. We’re just happy to have them back as players and guys.”
With the added presence of Hummels at center-back, would Süle consider playing right-back for Germany like he did at times for Bayern Munich?
“Considering I played there for the first time this year, I think I did a solid job. Others would have to decide if I will play for Germany, though. I’ll play where the coach wants me and I’ll help the team out however I can so we can become European champions,” Süle remarked.
