Cristiano Ronaldo just can’t beat Germany in major tournaments

This was the fifth time the Portuguese striker has failed to win against the Germans.

Stats time! Following Portugal’s 4-2 defeat to Germany in tonight’s game, Cristiano Ronaldo has lost his fifth game against the Germans in a major tournament. His loss in the Euros comes off the back of a dominant performance by Joachim Low’s men, in a game they were expected to really struggle in.

Ronaldo’s previous losses include:

  • A 3-1 loss at the 2006 World Cup.
  • A 3-2 loss at Euro 2008.
  • A 1-0 loss at Euro 2012.
  • A 4-0 loss at the 2014 World Cup, which included the iconic Lahm one-man-wall incident.
  • And finally, today’s 4-2 loss.

This was also the first time Cristiano Ronaldo has ever scored against Germany, but it all came for naught. While most would’ve expected the Portuguese to go on to win the game after scoring an incredible counterattacking goal in the opening 15 minutes, the Germans roared back into life with strong performances from Robin Gosens, Kai Havertz, Joshua Kimmich, Thomas Muller, and Serge Gnabry.

While they managed to get one back in the second half and Renato Sanches hit the crossbar with a long range shot, the Portuguese simply didn’t create enough chances, and Ronaldo himself was rather subdued. Looks like Germany counts as his bogey team for now.
