Could it be a homecoming for Javi Martinez?

In a move that many have been expecting, former Bayern Munich midfielder Javi Martinez is reportedly in talks with his home club, Athletic Bilbao, regarding a return.

According to Spanish outlet El Correo, Martinez could be making his way back to Spain for the next (last?) stage of his career. The news was captured by Goal journalist Ronan Murphy, who cited another report from AS and issued this tweet:

Based on his performance over the past two seasons, it is clear that Martinez still has a lot to offer a club as a defensive midfielder or even as a center-back. Martinez still has the instincts, leadership, and skill to play at a high level. While he has slowed down a bit, Martinez would still likely be a starting-caliber player at a club like Athletic Bilbao, even if he was stuck on the bench for Bayern Munich.

The 32-year-old might take some time before making his final decision, but it does appear like his long-rumored return to Bilbao could be happening. Martinez, of course, transferred to Bayern Munich from Athletic Bilbao back in 2012.
