Bayern Munich has been crowned Bundesliga champions for the ninth consecutive seasons after Borussia Dortmund’s 3-2 victory over RB Leipzig at the Westfalenstadion. The dropped points from Leipzig sees that they cannot mathematically catch Bayern at the top of the table with only two match weeks remaining after this weekend’s concludes.
The term “sofameisters” has been comically touted around to describe the nature in which Bayern has clinched their ninth straight Bundesliga title, but during the commentary for Dortmund-Leipzig, Derek Rae used the term “BusMeisters,” which is perhaps more accurate given that Bayern was probably on the bus on the way to the Allianz Arena when their fate was sealed.
Winning by virtue of a non-Bayern result might not be the exact way that many Bayern fans would’ve wanted to clinch the title, but as BFW’s Phillip Quinn had said recently on our slack channel; “The season is a collective of points earned throughout the entire season....” Bayern got the results and points they needed to while their rivals dropped points where they perhaps should not have. The early exit from the DFB-Pokal and getting knocked out of the Champions League in the quarter-finals were both big blows after Bayern had competed the historic “sextuple,” but they were able to get it over the line in the Bundesliga season that proved to be incredibly challenging as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.
Looking back on some of the closer results that made a big difference in the table, Bayern got it done when they had to:
- The last minute, 4-3 win over Hertha Berlin
- The stoppage time, 2-1 win over Bayer Leverkusen
- The 1-0 win over RB Leipzig
- Narrowly holding on to beat SC Freiburg 2-1
- Narrowly holding on to beat Wolfsburg 2-1
- Coming from 2-0 down to beat Mainz 5-2
- Beating Dortmund in both installments of Der Klassiker
And those are just a handful of important examples.
Enjoy this, Bayern fans! We are champions - again! Back to back to back to back to back to back to back to back to back!
