Yann Sommer hopes Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski breaks the record...just not this weekend

Everyone can appreciate how great Robert Lewandowski has been — even the opposition.

In an interview with Sport 1 (as captured by Bundesliga.com), Borussia Mönchengladbach goalkeeper Yann Sommer expressed his appreciation for Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski, but also made it clear that he wants to keep the Polish Hitman off of the score sheet this weekend.

“The record would be the icing on the cake for his incredible career,” Sommer told Sport1. “He’s been playing at a consistently high level for years and is a key player in a great team. He’s a great finisher and an unpredictable one too. I’ll have to be quick and make good decisions. I wouldn’t begrudge him the record — just not this weekend.”

Lewandowski needs just five more goals to break Gerd Müller’s record, so anything the Poland international can muster up this weekend will be a huge boost to his hopes of breaking the mark.

It won’t be easy, though. Borussia Mönchengladbach always plays Bayern Munich tough and Sommer is no slouch in between the sticks.

“I like playing against him — against all great strikers,” Sommer told Bundesliga.com. “They’re just a great challenge as a goalkeeper — they push you to the limit. You have to be very focused. They’re very clever. And as a person on the pitch, he’s very grounded and has enormous quality.”
