Erling Haaland named Bundesliga Player of the Season — Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski snubbed again!

The world continues to underrate the best striker in the world at the moment. Robert Lewandowski was once again robbed of a major accolade.

Yes, you read that headline right.

Bayern Munich star Robert Lewandowski was not voted as the Bundesliga Player of the Season. Taking Lewandowski’s place was the young Norwegian striker, Erling Haaland. Now, I am not here to say that Haaland was not phenomenal or would be undeserving of the award in some other season. What I am here to say is that this is an absolute joke.

Haaland was great, yes. However, Lewandowski scored 41 goals in 29 games. Lewandowski literally broke the record for most goals scored in a Bundesliga season, a record that Gerd Müller had retained since 1971/1972. This feat had always been seen as unbeatable but the Poland captain pulled off the impossible and actually surpassed the 40 goal tally.

Not to mention, André Silva might have a better case who carried Eintracht Frankfurt this season and brought them within fingertips reach of Champions League qualification next season. Silva also scored more goals and provided more assists than Haaland, but that’s not the point. The point is that it should’ve been a unanimous decision for the Pole.

In the end, Haaland received 50 percent of the votes, taking the prize from Lewandowski, who won the season prior. So who votes? The Bundesliga Player of the Season is actually decided by a fan vote. Haaland is no doubt a favorite of many and is one of the world’s most exciting prospects. I can see why there is so much love for Haaland but come on, how could you not vote for Lewandowski?! Unless this vote is solely based on their performances in the DFB-Pokal, then it is hard to fathom how this decision was made.

Haaland has always been given the benefit of fan bias, including his Golden Boy 2020 win over treble winner Alphonso Davies. While Haaland had a spectacular year in 2020 as well as Davies, it was always clear that Haaland would be favored.

Are you bothered by Lewandowski’s snub from yet another major recognition? Did Haaland actually deserve to win the Player of the Season? Let us know in the comments!
