When Julian Nagelsmann gets his Bayern Munich squad together for the first time this summer, it’s possible that he will be without seventeen different players thanks to international commitments. Whether it’s Euro 2020, the U-21 European Championship, or the CONCACAF Gold Cup, Bayern will be throwing players all over the globe for tournaments.
Thirteen Bayern players will be at the continent-wide Euro 2020 (played in 2021, yes) with the bulk of that group being the eight-man Germany contingent. Led by Manuel Neuer and a returning Thomas Müller, they’ll be joined by basically every midfielder on the Bayern roster.
France will host a quartet of Bayern players including Kingsley Coman and Lucas Hernandez. Oh yeah, that Robert Lewandowski will be with Poland.
But, that’s not all! Dayot Upamecano and Lars Lukas Mai will be joining their respective nations for this summer’s U-21 European Championship, and while the rosters aren’t out yet as the tournament takes place later in the summer, Alphonso Davies and Chris Richards could be taking part in the CONCACAF Gold Cup.
I know what you’re thinking, and yeah this stinks. Every coach wants to have their full complement of players together from the beginning of training, especially a new coach at a club. This could foretell a slower-than-wanted start for Bayern coming out to start the new season.
