It’s been a week of departures for Bayern Munich, as almost the entire first team coaching staff as well as three veteran players leave the club for pastures anew. Luckily, youth team director Jochen Sauer will not join the exodus, as he seems determined to stay and get the reserves promoted back into the 3.Liga.
Bayern II were relegated this weekend following an unlucky season full of close calls and missed chances. This is an extremely bitter development for the entire youth project at the club, as relegation means yet another season in the Regionalliga, which is notoriously hard to get promoted from. Rumors also circulated that Sauer was considering moving on from his position to FC Augsburg, who were offering him a place in the first team setup.
Now, however, it looks like he will be staying put. Per AZ, Sauer wants to fulfill the remainder of his contract, which runs until 2023. “Our goal is to get out of the league and get back to the third division,” said the Bayern campus director. “We will try to put together a high-quality team for this.”
