EA Sports have just released their shortlist of nominees for this year’s FIFA 21 Bundesliga Team of the Season vote. It is essential to note that these nominations are based on players’ Bundesliga performances only, so no DFB-Pokal or Champions League performances were considered. Out of the 40 nominees for this year’s TOTS, seven Bayern Munich players were included. Members of Die Roten included in this year’s shortlist were Manuel Neuer, Alphonso Davies, Thomas Müller, Joshua Kimmich, Leon Goretzka, Serge Gnabry, and of course, Robert Lewandowski.
Surprise Entries
Serge Gnabry was a shock entry in this year’s nominees. While Gnabry hasn’t been poor, he has only accumulated 9 goals and 3 assist in this year’s campaign compared to 12 goals and 11 assists last season. This season the German winger took a step back in his play, if anything.
Mats Hummels was a name I was surprised to see in this year’s defender nominations. Mats Hummels holds a tackle success of just 41.9%, placing him at 58th in the league in this metric. Borussia Dortmund has conceded 42 times so far this season, which is nothing to be too impressed over. Baffled to understand how Hummels made the list over Nico Elvedi and other stand-out defenders this season. As much as I love Hummels, this season just wasn’t his best.
Notable Missing Players
Jonas Hofmann was a very notable player missing from this year’s shortlist. While I don’t think he would be in the best XI, he definitely deserved to be amongst the 40 nominees. Hoffmann was great for a mediocre Gladbach side and contributed 6 goals and 11 assists in just 21 appearances. His lack of appearances might have been a large factor in why he was not nominated, however, Max Kruse was nominated with just 19 appearances thus far.
Freiburg goalkeeper Florian Müller was another notable player missing from this year’s nominees. At the time of this article, Müller boasts the highest save percentage out of any goalkeeper in the Bundesliga with a 71.9% save percentage. While he only boasts a mediocre 6 clean sheets, he has held Freiburg in many matches this season and is a large reason for their strong performance this year. It is shocking to see him excluded from the five goalkeeper nominees.

You can vote for your best 11 players of the season on the EA Sports website. Once voting is completed, these cards will be released later in May. Although this is by no means an official Team of the Season for the Bundesliga, as these votes are largely based selected based on their potential released cards, rather than how well these players played this season. For example, Coutinho received a Team of the Season last year for his less than memorable campaign with Bayern.
