Bayern Munich can now officially add a fifth star to their team crest after winning the Bundesliga title for the ninth consecutive season. In total this is the 30th time Bayern had won the Bundesliga since its official formation back in 1963. Of course, they’ve won the title a total of 31 times, but prior to 1963, it wasn’t the Bundesliga; they won it in 1932 when it was still the German Football Championship.
Per the DFL’s official dress code for kits and team badges, stars are awarded for winning the league title three times (1), five times (2), ten times (3), twenty time (4), and 30 times (5). Bayern is the first club to have achieved the feat of five stars. From the 2021/22 season onward, all official Bayern products that contain the team badge can be permitted to have five stars.
Bayern, in coordination with Adidas, plans out officially rolling out their new kits and licensed apparel with the fifth star added by the middle of July. The jersey is set to be the first item for wide release that will contain the five stars. Adidas wants to ensure production goes smoothly and without error before that start adding stars to other apparel items other than the home kits.
Karl-Heinz Rummenigge expressed his excitement for the club to have earned its fifth star, recognizing how long of an effort it’s been to get to this moment. “The fifth star on our HOME jerseys is the award for 30 German championships since the Bundesliga was founded in 1963. This is the merit of many generations of players and proof of the decades-long consistency of FC Bayern at the highest level - the fans can count on it of FC Bayern be proud,” the club CEO said.
