Update: Hermann Gerland confirms upcoming departure from Bayern Munich

Bayern Munich assistant coach Hermann Gerland confirmed his upcoming departure with Bild reporter Christian Falk earlier today.

“I will be leaving FC Bayern at the end of the season,” Gerland told Falk.

Bild summarized its report with this lead:

After 30 years, Hermann Gerland (66) will leave the club. The assistant coach, who has become a cult figure in the past few decades, is due to leave in Munich in the summer. That was first reported by “kicker.”

While Gerland did not elaborate on the reasons why he will be leaving, Bild gave their take:

BILD knows: Similar to Miroslav Klose, Gerland saw the handling of the coaching team under Flick very critically this season.

Bild also shed some light on what could happen with some of Flick’s other assistant coaches as well:

And for the flick assistant Danny Röhl (32) the farewell could be approaching, because Nagelsmann brings his own video analyst Benjamin Glück with him. The only one from the team who will probably stay safe: goalkeeping coach and new confidante Toni Tapalović (40).

When Hansi Flick announced that he wanted to leave Bayern Munich, the club targeted RB Leipzig manager Julian Nagelsmann right away.

When Nagelsmann was ultimately hired, the speculation about what would happen to other members of the staff like Miroslav Klose, Hermann Gerland, Danny Röhl, and Kathleen Krüger among others, went into high gear.

We had heard that Klose will not be back and that Krüger will stay, but now it looks like Gerland has made up his mind to leave as well:

Gerland, who is immensely popular with the Bayern roster, was one of the coaches who was allegedly put off by some of the disagreements that occurred between the coaching staff and the front office.

Whatever caused that schism does not matter any longer as there will be a new regime taking over on Säbener Straße. It would be fascinating to know if Nagelsmann had any plans to work with either Klose or Gerland or if the alleged bad blood that exists from whatever has happened over the past two seasons is the sole impetus for Klose and Gerland leaving.

Whatever the case, Gerland is reportedly going to try and find a new job at the grand old age of 66. One thing is for certain, whatever club decides to bring in the veteran coach is going to get a gem.
