Robert Lewandowski equaled Gerd Muller’s 40-goal Bundesliga record with his converted penalty in the 26th minute as his chase for the record shadowed over proceedings, but SC Freiburg showed great fight to come away with the 2-2 draw at home. Christian Streich’s men were perhaps even a bit unlucky not to have taken full points at the Schwarzwald-Stadion as they had their fair share of chances in both halves, giving Alexander Nubel plenty to think about.
They still had a fighting chance for qualifying for one of the Europa Conference League spots, but VfB Stuttgrt coming from 1-0 down to beat Borussia Monchengladbach 2-1 didn’t do them any favors in that sense. For Bayern, this always had the danger of becoming a training-like scrimmage bar Lewandowski going for Gerd Muller’s record since they clinched the Bundesliga title last weekend.
Hansi Flick went with a full strength starting eleven bar Manuel Neuer being replaced by Nubel and Leon Goretzka, who was missing out through injury. It was argubly a good opportunity to start some fringe players, but Flick chose to go full strength from the get go, but eventually brought on Marc Roca, Corentin Tolisso, and Bouna Sarr in the second half along with Kingsley Coman. Perhaps Lewandowski could’ve had a better chance of getting goal number 41 had Muller, Serge Gnabry, and Leroy Sane stayed on a bit longer.
Scoring Summary:
Robert Lewandowski (P, 26’), Manuel Gulde (29’), Leroy Sane (53’), Christian Gunter (81’)
