Off the Crossbar: Cologne Alone — Borussia Dortmund’s Mats Hummels gone and forgotten

Has anyone seen Mats?

In one of the most bizarre stories you’ll see from this completely insane season, former Bayern Munich star and current Borussia Dortmund center-back stalwart Mats Hummels was left behind when the team buses departed RheinEnergieSTADION after a 2-2 draw with FC Köln on March 20th.

Per Bild (behind the Bild+ paywall), Borussia Dortmund loaded up its team buses and high-tailed it out of town after a disappointing draw. The only problem was that they pulled a Kate McCallister (Catherine O’Hara) and turned Hummels into Kevin McCallister (Macauley Culkin) in an odd German reboot of Home Alone — only if Kevin was an early 30s center-back for a team scuffling to climb into a Champions League spot.

In 2021, how does this happen?

Perhaps, Edin Terzic was checking out the powder situation on the nearest slopes? Who knows. It’s impossible to tell.

All that Bayern Munich fans can say, however, is that Kathleen Krüger would NEVER!

Anyway, this could not have been purposeful...surely Dortmund fans have a few other players they would have preferred the team left behind instead of Hummels.
