Terrible news for Bayern Munich: Per Bild, both Niklas Sule and Leon Goretzka suffered muscle injuries in yesterday’s defeat to PSG in the Champions League. Both are expected to be out for two to three weeks, ruling them out of next week’s game in Paris.
This is only the latest in a long line of bad news that has been plaguing Bayern since the tie was announced. Sule and Goretzka join Robert Lewandowski (knee) and Serge Gnabry (covid) on the sidelines, putting immense pressure on Hansi Flick to figure out how to line up his team in the coming weeks. It’s not just the UCL — Bayern’s Bundesliga title campaign could be in serious danger.
One good bit of news is that Marc Roca has at least returned to team training, so he could be available. However, the Spaniard has never been a first choice player for his coach, so it’s probably more likely that someone like Jamal Musiala or David Alaba takes Goretzka’s place in midfield. In defense, Jerome Boateng will have to do the job — lets hope he does better than he did last night, because Mbappe clearly got the better of him.
PSG could also be set to have absentees, depending on how Verratti and Florenzi recover from covid-19, and the extent of Marquinhos’ injury. Even so, it feels like Bayern have a real mountain to climb next week, given that the team needs to score at least two unanswered goals to make it through to the semi finals.
Update
Apparently, Bayern are waiting until tomorrow to announce the final diagnoses of Goretzka and Sule. The info will be in Hansi Flick’s press conference for Bayern-Union.
