Bayern Munich manager Hansi Flick has been a huge proponent of defender Jerome Boateng since taking over as head coach in 2019.
Many attribute Flick with helping revive Boateng’s career. When the news broke late Monday that Bayern Munich would not be offering Boateng a contract extension, Flick knew he would have to address it at his press conference today.
Clearly, the manager was not thrilled to be dealing with this subject prior to his squad’s big Champions League match against Paris Saint-Germain.

“I don’t want to say anything about that. Those are things where I don’t know how they get to the media, but it doesn’t matter,” said Flick (as captured by Tz). “Everyone knows how I feel about Jerome; everyone knows what quality he is. He played a good season, last year too. He is very focused on his job and performs well. He is experienced and has a high quality.”
When pressed further, Flick indicated that everyone will just have to wait to see what eventually happens with the veteran defender.
“I don’t know if I have to comment on everything from the media, so I’ll leave it that way,” said Flick. “The next few weeks will show whether that is true.”
The plot thickens, however. Per Bild (as captured by Twitter account @iMiaSanMia), Flick is not happy with the decision to let Boateng leave. More, Flick is even more unhappy at how news like this leaks out at inopportune times:
The future of Jérôme Boateng has been a point of conflict between Hansi Flick and Hasan Salihamidžić for months, and one of the reasons Flick is thinking about his future at Bayern. The coach is angry that the news about Boateng got public just before the PSG game [Bild] pic.twitter.com/VKw4swQSel

Whatever the case, the rumored rift between Flick and sporting director Hasan “Brazzo” Salihamidzic certainly did not improve with the Boateng news.
