The FC Bayern Munich Frauen saw their perfect run come to an end at the hands of rival Wolfsburg in the DFB-Pokal.
The loss snapped a 26-game winning streak for the Frauen, who have been excellent across all competitions this season.
Per FCBayern.com, Wolfsburg took a 2-0 lead into halftime and never looked back:
Alexandra Popp (13th) gave the home team an early 1-0 lead at Wolfsburg’s AOK Stadium and Ewa Pajor (45th + 2) scored the second goal before the break. For the Bayern women, not only is the dream of the final in Cologne ended prematurely, but also an incredible series of 26 competitive games in a row.
For Frauen manager Jens Scheuer, a slow start was the death knell for his squad.
“We knew it would be hard to win here. We slept through the first half. We actually wanted to determine the game, but let ourselves be intimidated a bit by Wolfsburg’s robustness,” said Scheuer. “In the second half, we tried everything again, and if we had scored a goal, we’d have been back in the game.”
Even with this loss the Frauen have done amazing things this season. The FC Bayern Frauen are the favorites to win the Frauen Bundesliga and should be a strong contender in the UEFA Women’s Champions League.
