According to a report from Sport Bild chief reporter Christian Falk, former Bayern Munich captain Mark van Bommel is the leading candidate to take over for Oliver Glasner at Wolfsburg, should the incumbent manager leave.

Glasner has been closely linked to a move to RB Leipzig, where he would take over for new Bayern Munich manager Julian Nagelsmann:

It’s no longer a secret: Wolfsburg coach Oliver Glasner (46) could leave VfL by the summer of 2022 despite the contract. Because: As the Ösi himself claims, his relationship with sporting director Jörg Schmadtke (57) is very sober. In addition: Glasner can use an exit clause for less than five million euros - he only has to pull it out by the end of April.

A poor relationship between a coach and a sporting director? Where have we heard that before?

One of Wolfsburg’s favorite coaches is on hold because of Glasner’s delaying tactics. According to information from SPORT BILD, the talks about a possible engagement of Mark van Bommel (44) are far along. The former Bayern captain is on the Wolfsburg list when Glasner leaves. The first contact is said to have already been made in autumn, when the bad relationship between Glasner and Schmadtke became public.

Van Bommel was rumored to be on the shortlist of candidates for Bayern Munich as well, but it was always clear that Nagelsmann was the primary target.
